Approximately 30% of Timken Super Precision's products are aerospace related, and require documentation that all specified requirements have been satisfied. Before our new system was implemented, developing a customer report for a given lot was tedious and time consuming. Strip chart sections for all devices the lots passed through had to be located, cut out and copied, and then taped back into original charts. Hardness records similarly had to be located and copied for a complete report. A major requirement for our new load tracking system was to eliminate the tedious report procedure described above. The new system records the minute-by-minute history of each lot as it is processed, consolidating data from all devices, as well as data from hardness test procedures, into a single report. The reports are quickly generated and include the complete thermal history of the lot, all hardness measurements, and a consolidated single page thermal chart with the temperature history for all thermal treatments. The quality group can now instantly generate concise and easy-to-review reports without assistance of heat treat staff. This innovative system has resulted in major time and cost savings, and a significant improvement in the quality and detail of the heat treat records.
